The Herreshoff Manufacturing Company of Bristol, Rhode Island was the premier American yacht builder from 1890 until the Second World War.  They made luxurious steam yachts and enormous America's Cup winning J boats, but Herreshoff's most lasting legacy may be the beautiful and eminently seaworthy small sailboat designs of Nathaniel Herreshoff, examples of which are still built and sailed all over New England and beyond.  The Herreshoff Marine Museum displays many of these, along with a few larger craft, and Cap'n Nat's pioneering (and patented) racing catamaran (hanging from ceiling) built around 1888 and retired after one season of winning every race it was allowed to enter.
