Big up to Bill Bailey for the hat!!

>>>>>

I have now put this pano online on my site in a simple tour. I put a little mirror ball where my hand was holding the Nodal Ninja Travel Pole.

This pano was shot at 8mm on the Canon 8-15mm in 3 frames (120 degree clicks) at 1/10th, F4 and ISO 1250 on a Canon 5DMk3

The tram was not moving at the time this was shot as it was at the “Town Hall” stop on Collins Street near Swanston St at the time.

I did attempt a pano at 13mm while the tram was in motion but I have yet to review the frames as I didn’t think they would work at the time I shot them.

The 8mm version I followed up with seemed to work (in my head at least) while I was doing the capture. I feel it did come together pretty well in the end.

I did have to use PTGui’s Viewpoint correction on one of the frames to help with alignment.

Nadir workflow question: I’ve been stitching with PTGui, then making a nadir patch with Pano2VR which I retouch in Photoshop; then I finish with Panotour. I’ve tried adding a handheld nadir shot in PTGui, but have been having better results leaving the nadir shot out and patching.

My question: is there a way to get the nadir tile outputted from PTGui, or any other ideas to streamline this a bit? (I shoot with a FF DSLR, 8-15mm Canon lens, 4 shots around (plus nadir shot I often don’t use).

Thomas Sharpless

Thomas Sharpless I always include nadir shots in the PTGui stitch, using viewpoint correction, and rarely patch a cube face in PS — only when there is an actual gap in the photo set. The key is to keep the nadir control points as close as possible to the area you actually need to patch.

Joni Kat Anderson Jim, someone I know gave a tip to use four coins that have Xs on them in your scene for the nadir. Place them on the ground around your rig and then when you shoot the nadir, you have built in control points to help with stitching. I haven’t tried it, but if I find the info, I’ll pass along to you.

I’m working on a multicamera trigger for PanoCatcher (for 3D stereo panoramas) and I thought about creating a multicamera shutter controller with basic functionality as shown in the images.

It would provide centralized, individual triggering of each camera (via remote) or synchronized, simultaneous triggering of all cameras via remote or other method as shown.

Do you think such a device would be of use to anyone?

Thomas Sharpless I use a simple passive circuit with 1N914 diodes to isolate 2 or 3 cameras actuated by a common switch or radio remote. For more than 4, or cascading, an active circuit such as an opto-isolator is necessary.

Yiorgos Theo Thomas, the unit has onboard wireless receiver that allows individual or collective control of the cameras from 50+ meters.

It can also be triggered by third-party devices like Promote, intervalometer, etc or by various sensors, I’ll have 3 types available, motion, sound and light sensors.

Until I get result of the test of 360° Surround Video Camera with the low light ( Jeffrey, right? ) I am playing with the flat video.

I am studying how to make a correlation between the inserted flat video and with the set of 360° Surround Photography which is changing along the video timeline. The idea is such (e.g. example: http://www.burger.si/…/Postojns…/2012/21_PostojnskaJama.html ) when the train is driving inside the cave the panoramas are changing with the timing set of marks along the video timeline.

It’s been at least a decade since I’ve purchased a new camera bag. With the nodal ninja kit and camera and a couple lenses I’m wondering if you guys have a favorite bag that you’d recommend? I really like the think tank airport accelerator and the accommodation for a laptop but it’s not a great setup for VR kits. Any suggestions?

Roger David Williams The amazing ThinkTank bag I was given at the Prague IVRPA meeting is quite definitely the best bag I have ever owned. The only problem with its many flaps, folders and pockets is remembering where I put things! It also gets heavy QUICKLY when I load everything I might need for a shoot in it. But that’s true whatever bag you use, isn’t it!

Shot with my Nikon D810 and shaved 10.5mm f/2.8 fisheye on a Panoneed robotic head with a Ramper Pro. RAW files were edited and converted to 16-bit TIFFs with Lightroom / LRTimelapse, batch stitching to equirectangular panoramas with PTGui Pro, some actions like the mirror ball for the nadir cap were batched out with a custom Photoshop action. Why the hell has 360cities now auto rotation on all panos? I can’t even disable it for my own.

Auto rotation sucks, it’s awful and a patronization of the user. I’d accept a first time auto rotate that stays off once the user interacted with the pano. But there’s not even a switch to turn it off!

I am writing the article about the evolution of 360° panoramas display from PC monitors to e-tables and mobile phones screens and all to nowadays HMD »boom« which is happening right now.

I am mentioning the very first use of interactive panoramas with mobile phones which started in 2003 and was launched in March 2004 by largest Slovenian mobile communications provider Mobitel- within their portal Planet. I was checking the magazines/literature from that time and before … and also with the search of the internet I didn’t find any earlier projects.

As I need to be correct with the information I thought that someone of you did it before (as the officially launched project, not just internal playing – we did that even before 2003). Any feed back info would be very welcome. Thanks!

I had just tried the Google Street View app and wonder what’s the point of publishing pano there since all the exposure you may gain will not translate in buisness opportunities since there no way to link your actual website within the app (as far as i can see yout got only your photo profile with your name – or company name for the smarters – but you cannot display more infos or add links).

280 degree lens test – quite rough, but shows potential hand held, fpv(on forhead), on top of the head and on the chest. Love this thing.

This could have been a hit with pano photographers if they would have put the camera rotation at the nodal point. But, maybe some smart company will offer an “upgrade” arm set, (with appropriate app) so it will be.

Christopher O’Grady I used the 360Precision Atome for this shoot. I travel to these villas on a scooter with three light stands so I need to be as light as I can. It also keeps the weight down on my carbon fibre tripod. The ONLY time I get stitching errors is when I shoot in or near doorways.

Matthew Rogers Matthias Taugwalder so true but you also need a minimum level of quality before the experience becomes enjoyable. At the moment the vast majority of 360Video isn’t enjoyable.

Matthias Taugwalder Matthew Rogers Absolutely true. I think such “hardware conceptual studies” are important and will help to advance the tech further. But I guess we agree that having an actual usable rig for real-world productions is something different.

Matthew Rogers Matthias Taugwalder but if you look at what they have in place all they need for a single axis working rig are the cameras. Take a look at what people do with 200+ DSLR 3D scanning rigs, for more complex than this set-up.

Question for the DIY enthuthiasts:

I have a NN4 with a RD16 rotator, and currently use a nikon dx body with 17-50 lens (no chance of improving set up for now, I’d buy a fisheye as soon as it’s economically possible :S). I live in argentina, so i’m a bit screwed with Importing stuff due to currency and customs regulations.

Would it be possible to make some sort of DIY Nadir adapter? Im struggling a bit with getting NICE nadir shots… I get away with some editing and logo-inse…

Sacha Griffin Moving the tripod works.. but the nadir adapter is my favorite thing ever. I’m not a fan of Viewpoint correction abuse.. if the floor is at all reflective you end up with different lighting when you move too much. I don’t see why you can’t make an adapter.. just something that can fit under your upper nn4 arm.

A very nice place at Northeast Brazil called Morro Branco at the state of Ceará. It is not far from the capital Fortaleza. This is the place from where people take colored sand to make a very well know art typically from there (search for images using “artesanato areia morro branco” at google to see it).

Ready for VR.

Pics made with a gopro (9 in the 1st, 10 in the 2nd). Somehow cloudy day.
