My guess is that this technique will make panoramas obsolete one day. Ok, resolution is still horrible, these are 37 12mp jpgs (Phantom 3P), and plenty of artifacts. But, one day when megapixels and processing power are plenty…. Automated drones will fly around mapping the world, and you can be anywhere on your holodeck.

This was 10 minutes of flying and 30 minutes of stitching:

Wished I had it for my travel pole from day one. But I have 3 sets now so I can rapidly move the R1 from the tripod, to either pole.'

'Detail of the mounting arms and lower rotator as mounted to the 058B tripod. I was using the RD5 rotator but will not do it again. It can't handle the load as well as the fixed click units and it is very hard to feel the clicks with it.'

'Quick clips on the Guy Wire Reels. Was a good change from the velcro wire straps that came with the Guy Wire Reels'

'Clips up top as well. The ones that came with the pole are screw type and a pain in the ass to use. This are still a bit big (show up in the Nadir) but do the trick. I'll keep an eye out for some smaller ones.'

'Surrounded by great buildings in Melbourne!'

So, is it possible to tell Autopano Giga to take the exact same template for two 360 panos? The background is that I’ve got two 360 panoramas with the only difference being that in one of them a display board is slided out of a wall. To offer interactivity (i.e. sliding the board out upon click) I need both shots to be exactly the same. I haven’t been able to find this in Giga. Is this possible? Thanks smile emoticon

Tom Mills yes, although it doesnt work in same way as ptgui template, i had similar question re autopano video a while ago.. 2 360 videos same spot, I was told you can move images or video to another folder copy the project file with your position there and open it assuming images/video are called the same it will give you exact same orientation (pitch, roll and fov..)

It was kind of testing what is the reaction to the perception of mono panoramas vs stereo panoramas (3Ds). People first tried »monos« and were very enthusiastic… but then we loaded 3Ds – »stereos« … there was no way back anymore… those who wanted monos for the future projects which includes also VR Goggles immediately demanded 3Ds, even with the double price.

Boštjan Burger Roger, larger devices are with a bit blurry-no so sharp image when the VR goggle is not adjustable. But when you can adjuste the distance between the lens and the screen than the res. is proper.

Jimmy Chou I have the Samyang version with removable hood. I bought it as a start out lens to learn the workflow before dumping big money on Canon lens. I use this lens on Sony A6000. Thomas Sharpless Above f/8 an 8mm lens is already losing sharpness due to diffraction. So saying it is best at f/11 or f/13 is the same as saying it is not a very sharp 8mm lens.

Hey guys, I’m doing some research on upgrading my pano/photography gear to the next level. I’m currently shooting Nikon D7000 with Sigma 8mm and Nodal Ninja R10 with fixed ring clamp. I would like to upgrade to the Nikon D810 / Nikkor 16mm Fisheye combination. Would it be possible to keep using my Nodal Ninja R10 when I just buy an extra ring for the 16mm fisheye? My rotator is now set to 6 stops. Will that be enough to get a full spherical when I also add an extra nadir shot (so 7 in total) ? Or do I need to upgrade my setup to a classic L-shaped panorama head?

OK it’s time to get your suggestions for the next IVRPA conference in Quebec City a unique location in North America. Get ready for another great conference and workshops.

Last year, I got great suggestions from you guys so any suggestion for interesting talks will be appreciated.

P.S. Last year, the Early Bird tickets were sold very quickly. This year, all IVRPA members will receive a notification by email before all others so if you want to get the best price for the best conference, you’d better join IVRPA now. Tickets and Hotel Reservation will come soon.

Elizabeth Gentile Thanks for your input – the surface I am shooting on is a thick gym mat – I will not be able to get close to the pano head to turn it manually for fear of moving the tripod when I take a step….a motorized head would eliminate that risk.

1 · October 21 at 11:55pm

View 1 more reply

Elizabeth Gentile I will try first with my current set up and the weight and maybe even use a small plywood platform on top of the mat. This is inside a rock climbing gym so the mats are thick and soft, a real challenge.

October 22 at 3:24pm

Robert Harshman I would just take your shoes off, step lightly away from the tripod feet and not worry about it. Or you could add a significant weight to the tripod so it sinks into the mat and remains stable.

2 · October 22 at 12:38am

Keith Martin

Keith Martin Agreed: hang a heavy weight from the tripod center. If it’s a gym perhaps there are actual weights? Also, if you’re careful, although you may move it when you step near it should go back to at least close to the same spot when you step away again. However, the PanoCatcher really would be exactly what you need. It’s more a question of getting one in time!

About stitching stereoscopic panoramas…

I have at least two choices when stitching the many shots needed to make a stereoscopic panorama. The two I am considering are (1) to rotate my two-camera assembly about a point mid-way between their two NPPs or (2) to rotate about the NPP of one of them. If you have tried both, which do you recommend. If you haven’t tried one or the other, what did you do instead? Advice to try both and see which works best won’t be very helpful as I still can’t sync them reliably. (Heavy sigh…)

New 2.0 release from FSPViewer!

Now the “shimmering” effect that can be noticed when panning slowly at a small (less than 50%) zoom factor has been greatly reduced.

Added a Tools/Set View Parameters menu to manually set yaw, pitch and horizontal field of view.

Added an option to show the current values of yaw and pitch in the status bar.

Philip Giles asked a question.

October 19 at 10:47pm

Creating a UI & have been discussing the the pros & cons of various panorama controls options with the client. The panos will auto rotate a little on loading, so it should be obvious they are interactive, after which the user can take control.

Client feels a full set of controls (option 3) is more user friendly. I’m thinking simpler is better & prefer option 1, feeling controls on desktop are a little redundant. Mobile version will be show/hide hotspots only. What’s your opinion/experience?

Zoom in & out, hide/show hotspots

Look left, right, up & down, zoom in & out, hide/show hotspots

Nothing, just a learning/help screen on startup

Look left, right, up & down, auto-rotate on/off, zoom in & out, hide/show hotspo

Benjamin Baudel On mobile/tablet device no button at all is probably the best choice.

on desktop a kind of interface can be usefull for beginners if there is no introduction screen to learn how to consume the 360/VR/virtual media.

Philip Giles I agree that controls are redundant on mobile/tablet, as does the client. Swipe & pinch seem to be second nature to all users. I’m not convinced about gyro though Keith, probably because I find it a complete gimmick. Some users may love it though. Be interesting to find out somehow.

Philip Giles

Philip Giles Thanks for all the feedback. Recommendations to the client will be for navigation instruction on first load, small auto rotate to initial view, controls for zoom in/out, show/hide hotspots only. For mobile & tablet we will do away with the zoom in/out. Then we’ll add a full set of controls as they wantwink emoticon

Alexandre Jenny To save disk space, I will delete the photos and only perserve the project file and the final panorama. In APG, sometimes I need to look back and make minor adjustment to my panorama. In this situation, I need to generate only parts of my photos. And APG force to detect all of the photos so that I will have to generate all photos once more even if I make a very small adjustment. Can I choose to ignore the missing files when opening a APG project file?

Barney Meyer Education licenses do not apply to John’s course as you need to be a registered teaching institution. Anyway, Autopano Giga is not the best solution for 360° panos. I use APG as well as PTGUI, each has it’s place and each has very strong features.

Just the example (my remote shooter died that day and I was quite remote to get the another one quickly) that it takes with the proper panohead less than a minute to shoot precise and a hi res. tone mapping ( 5 steps) panorama. Done with the slight rain. Stitching is then automatic batch process – no time consuming.

360 CODING – DIGISFERA/GOOGLE

Digisfera joining Google really shows that there is value in the know-how of custom coding for 360 media.

Great for Digisfera but a little sad for the small-business 360 community. The possibly best viewer is dicontinued, and there is one less place to go for custom projects.

Cedric FrozenjaZz Simon Excellent! When I went there, I had only a compact… At what height was your camera? When I shoot panos handheld, I tend to have camera at waist level. I tried above my head, but results are not so good wink emoticon

Stephan Weber Camera was at normal eye level. I think, thats the easiest Position for turning around.

Cotopaxi is an active stratovolcano in the Andes Mountains, located in the Latacunga canton of Cotopaxi Province, about 50 km (31 mi) south of Quito, and 33 km (21 mi) northeast of the city of Latacunga, Ecuador, in South America.[3] It is the second highest summit in Ecuador, reaching a height of 5,897 m (19,347 ft). It is one of the world’s highest volcanoes.

Since 1738, Cotopaxi has erupted more than 50 times, resulting in the creation of numerous valleys formed by lahars …

Tomasz Brodecki Are you completely sure that it is the same lens? It seems to behave differently on the video you linked. Does the software provided with the lens allow you to treat the images as those coming from 220 or 250?

1 · October 18 at 7:27pm

Ali Zareiee I have tried both Kolor and Videostitch and both bend the image. Kolor more so. I am pretty sure it is the 280 in the North Korean footage. And treated in Videostitch….says in the nadir patch. Odd

On my recent journey through Asia I only shot very few panoramas. This here is the first one from a more or less arbitrary place on my first day in Seoul on a Sunday morning end of September.

I have seen footage shot with this 280 lens in North Korea and the nadir is relatively small and no bending in the image. When I insert When I insert 230 in the fov the nadir becomes a massive black hole. Any advice?https://www.facebook.com/ali.zareiee/videos/10153719488481151/?pnref=story

Yiorgos Theo I think we need a “please, no more landscapes” type of award…

1 · October 15 at 8:24pm

Aleksandr Reznik Strange, but they don’t notify by an email. You can only see all these gold/bronze only after you login to their site. After logging i found a gold medal smile emoticon

The rules seem to be: “Gold top 2%, Silver next 10%, Bronze next 33%”

One more from a place in Seoul where GSV won’t take you anytime soon smile emoticon

It was stunning to walk down from Mount Namsan after overlooking a multimillion city to land here in a place that looks pretty much like the small streets of any rural town in Italy (including piles of waste and creative wiring of powerlines).

Note the nice new annotation feature on 360cities, but also note that there is no fullscreen button on the screen frown emoticon that one only can zoom …
