Tanzania: Seaweed Shamba (Garden), Matemwe, Zanzibar

Seaweed farming in Zanzibar was Introduced from South East Asia in the 1980s. The industry employs mostly women. Lately the yearly crop has been reduced by rising sea temperatures and a bacteria which affects the growth of the plants. Seaweed from Zanzibar is used as a vegetable in Asia. It is also used in dental products, makeup and medicine.
