On Saturday, November 24th, 1973 a US Navy DC Airplane had to do an emergency landing on the black sandy beach of Sólheimasandur in Iceland. Luckily everyone survived the crash.  Instead of recovering the plane, the wreckage was left behind on the black beach causing some very dramatic sights.  This photo was taken from inside the wreck looking out at the surrounding black sand beach. While I was taking the photo, some other visitors came by which you can see at one side of the plane. In order to get to the plane, you need to hike through the sandy beach or take a beach-worthy vehicle as the other visitors did.You can find more photos and information about the wreck here and here.
